Free radicals get into the core of the cell and damage the RNA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RNA) When the cell reproduces, having outlived it's life span or in the case of a reproductive cell when it is ready to make a new life, IF there is damage to the RNA you can't get a good reproduction of the (hopefully) healthy cell.
